Case Study: Improving Documentation Controls for Oil & Gas Refineries

Maintaining accurate Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) is crucial for safety and maintenance at large-scale energy facilities. When data quality is inconsistent, it creates massive bottlenecks in enterprise resource planning software, slowing down critical engineering updates.

The Challenge

A client operating a large facility recognized that administrative inefficiencies were hindering engineering progress. The ask was to improve documentation controls at an oil and gas refinery. They needed a highly reliable, automated method to govern how critical engineering data was verified before entering their central database.

The Engineering Solution

RLA Engineering approached this as a systems engineering challenge, focusing on the intersection of human workflows and software validation. We implemented an improved Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that integrated custom macros designed to assess the input data quality of P&ID changes before they were allowed to upload to the plant-wide SAP database.
