Case Study: Reducing Wearable Device Field Failures Through Custom Reliability Testing

In the highly competitive wearable technology market, product durability is just as critical as software functionality. A consumer electronics client partnered with RLA Engineering to address severe reliability issues impacting their product lifecycle and brand reputation.

The Challenge

The client needed to drastically reduce the mechanical field failures of an existing wearable device. These field failures were causing user dissatisfaction and increasing warranty replacement costs, requiring immediate intervention from our engineering team to isolate the root causes of the mechanical breakdowns.

The Engineering Solution

To accurately diagnose and prevent these hardware issues, RLA Engineering designed and built a specialized benchtop reliability tester. This custom testing hardware was engineered specifically to qualify and simulate real-world mechanical stresses on the wearable devices across multiple axes, specifically focusing on X, Y, Z, and θ (theta) rotational forces.

By subjecting the wearables to these rigorous, automated stress parameters, we provided the client with actionable data to yield critical R&D improvements.
